The Martin 000X1 is a low budget guitar in the extensive Martin stable and gives quite a punch for an instrument this size. Comparable instruments of these dimensions are the Taylor 110 Larrive OM-03 SP and Blueridge BR-43. You’ll read some glowing reviews of the 000X1 on line, and you can take them at their word. A purist might say this guitar isn’t that good, because the body and neck are not made of wood, but don’t be put off!

First thing you notice, this instrument has literally no embellishments. There are fret position markers on the side, for example, but not on the fret board itself. The fret board and bridge are fabricated from Morado. The neck is stratabond, a bit like a plywood, and very solid looking. It has no binding, and the spruce sound board has a light satin lacquer finish. It doesn’t have an inlaid rosette, but sports a tasteful decal. I like the basic appearance of this Martin guitar, but then I’m more interested in This instrument is very comfortable to hold partly because of it’s small sound box, and I found it enjoyable to play.

The neck is medium thin and fast, and the body is not too light. I don’t like the feel of a guitar that’s too light. The Martin 000X1 is manufactured in Mexico with the attention to quality work we associate with the company. Nut width is 1-11/16, but seems somehow wider. Of course, Martin have the experience to make correct use of the width available. There’s plenty of room to clear the strings with pudgy fingers, but the strings are spaced well enough enough to facilitate quick finger movements. The sound board is braced in the X-series style which Martin is famous for.

The instrument has impressive overall tone, but it’s the basses that really impress – as you might expect with an instrument from the Martin range. The E and A strings exhibit a resonance not found in the majority other guitars of this size. The bass tone is little ‘fuzzy’, which is wonderful if you want to pick the blues. This dirty sound is a matter of taste, but it suits me just fine. I bought the 000X1AE, which has a bug under the saddle, and volume-tone controls discretely fixed just inside body near the sound hole.

It starts to shine when finger picking the blues, I found. Heavy picking doesn’t detract from the quality of this baby. The strings may bounce a little, but hey, it’s blues! The overall volume is not the loudest, as as you would think with a 000 size body, but that magic sustain must come from somewhere. I plucked the bass E and noticed that it rang a long time after. This can make possible really great effects, such as bending the treble strings some over that top of that droning bass note.

Hopefully, you found this brief review useful, particularly if you were thinking of purchasing this instrument. Of course, there are negative features I could think of. For example, the spruce top is very lightly lacquered and prone to bangs and scratches. That said, the body is probably indestructible. I’ve given my own 000X1 a few pretty heavy knocks with no apparent marks. Some other advice I might give – the appearance of the back and sides can vary substantially from guitar to guitar, and some of them aren’t very attractive, so take the trouble to go and choose one at your local musical instrument store instead of placing an order from a distance.

We will study the first half or the Introduction and the Part A portion of the song Can't Buy Me Love in this lesson. We will finish up this song in the second lesson in this finger-style lesson series.

We will study the first half or the Introduction and the Part A portion of the song Can’t Buy Me Love in this lesson. We will finish up this song in the second lesson in this finger-style lesson series.

The introduction of the piece should be played with feeling – just listen to the CD. The chord forms should be brushed with the right hand thumb.

Also, once you have fingered these chord forms, be sure to hold your fingers in place to play the subsequent notes. As you will experience, this will create a free-flowing sound for this portion of the song.

Can’t Buy Me Love – Playing The Rhythm Chords

As you study the lesson notation and TAB, you will note that there are chord diagrams placed above the notation staff, which is the upper staff. These chords should be formed with your left hand fingers and generally reflect the melody line as well.

The rhythm chord placement is also very useful for those of you who are interested in playing the accompaniment for this song. The finger-style arrangement for this lesson for Can’t Buy Me Love utilizes the alternating bass method, using the right hand thumb.

The melody notes? These notes are played using the first, second, and third fingers of the right hand. It is inevitable that you will have to depart from the chord forms with your left hand fingering, but do so only when necessary and then return to the original chord forms.

This will allow you to more easily play the melody line and it will additionally keep you aware of your position within the score. When absolutely necessary lift your left hand finger from the indicated chord forms.

The F Major Chord

The F chord requires some special attention in Part A. There are several fingering you can utilize to play the F Major chord. As you will see, the method that is used in this example utilizes the Thumb of the left hand in lieu of the barred index finger, which would press down all 6 strings.

It is of course up to you which method you use. The object is to achieve a certain comfort in playing this in finger-style fashion and you will develop your own preferences and playing style over time.

Syncopation Notes of Can’t Buy Me Love

You will find that the use of syncopated notes is a very common technique that many finger-style artists use. Although the syncopated note can be played in a few different manners, this notes depicted in this lesson place the notes slightly behind their normal location.

Refer to the lesson materials. The location of the first syncopated note is after the Introduction, in the Part A portion of the TAB. To view this example, take a look at the music – the 7th measure in particular. It is the last note in the measure.

Ordinarily this note would be placed as the first note in the 8th measure, but to bring syncopation to the piece it is moved “backward” in the music by 1/2 beat to the 7th measure. You will more examples of this technique in not only this piece, but in many other finger-style TAB’s.

We probably have a plan for you if you are interested in constructing a classical or an acoustic guitar. Our comprehensive library of plans keeps on growing and we offer a wide selection for you to choose from.

It does takes a fantastic set of plans to create a fantastic handmade instrument and our resident plan designer and CAD expert, David, has been involved with guitar construction, repair and teaching for over 40 years.

Based In Architecture:

Being a registered architect, David has additionally owned an architectural company since 1982. He has experience with Fortune 500 companies and has worked on many award-winning commercial projects, industrial projects and elaborate residential projects during his career.

Since 1988 David has dominated the CAD development in architecture, by developing well-defined and structured documentation. He has given classes and seminars on working efficiently with CAD systems and his plans are held in high regard.

His talent for both music and CAD have led him to the crossroads of bringing the best documented plans for luthiers that are available in today’s market. You will find that these full sized documents are well illustrated with detail, notes and dimensions that will arm you with the necessary information to make some notable instruments.

Designing and documenting a guitar is much the same as a fine home, commercial building or furniture. All it means is translating what is in the minds eye to paper.

Specialized Tools That Are Needed:

Also in order to make the building process as smooth and precise as possible, David has decided to make many of his own specialized tools that he uses in the making process available in plan form as well.

You will notice plans that include heated and unheated side benders, all sizes of inside forms and work boards, jigs for gluing, cutting, routing and nearly everything compulsory of some of the demanding construction operations.

Future Plans:

Right now, we have focused on classical and, acoustic guitars and all the neat little tools that can be used to make your building life a great deal easier. We have plans to not only continue to develop classical and acoustic plan options, but also we will be developing a line of electric guitar plans and then offering plans for other stringed instruments such as, dulcimers, ukuleles, mandolins and more.

Our Acoustic Plans:

All plans consist of 4 sheets with the following data:

Main Guitar Layout, Building Notes, Details and Bracing Notes.

Sections – Both Longitudinal and Lateral, Neck Sections, Neck Joint Details

Back Bracing Templates, Back Bracing Layouts and Bracing Templates.

Bracing Layouts for Top Bracing, Bridge Details and Reinforcement Diagrams.

Here is a sampling of plans that are available:

The Dreadnought

The Dreadnought is a very common guitar model. It was named after a large class of battle ship of the British Navy during WWI. C.F. Martin rolled out the Dreadnought in 1931. It has been a very common model for flat-picking artists.

Body Type: Dreadnought (similar to Martin D-28), Body Dimensions: 20.3″ x 15.6″ x 4.75″, Scale: 25.4″, Frets: 14 to the body, 21 total, Bracing: Traditional X.

Parlor or 000 Concert

The 000 Concert or Parlor Model was introduced by Martin as well and it is a outstanding, well-balanced little instrument that is awesome for flat-picking and finger-style picking.

Body Type: 000 (Similar to Martin 000 Parlor), Scale: 25.4″, Frets: 14 to body 21 total, Body Dimensions: 18.875″ x 14.22″ x 4.125″, Bracing: Traditional X,

J45 True Vintage:

Gibson first introduced this guitar back in the 1940′s as their response to the popularity of the dreadnought guitar by Martin. Still being known as a dreadnought, this shape is more well known as the ’round-shouldered’ dreadnought and makes for a fantastic flat-picking or finger-style guitar.

Body Type: Round-Shouldered Acoustic, Scale: 25.4″, Frets: 14 to the body, 21 total, Body Dimensions: 20.187″ x 16.09″ x 4.85″, Bracing: Traditional X (Scalloped Bracing Alternate),

The Grand Auditorium Shape:

Taylor first introduced the very common Grand Auditorium several years back and this plan is very similar to that instrument shape. The Martin J series is very close to these specifications as well. By augmentation of the top bracing and tonewood selection you can additionally enhance the voice of these big instruments.

Body Type: Grand Auditorium Grand J, Bracing: Traditional X, Scale: 25.4″, Frets: 14 to the body, 21 total, Body Dimensions: 19.78″ x 16.09″ x 4.85″.

The Jumbo, J200 or JM

This is about the biggest bodied acoustic you will find. Gibson, Martin and Taylor each have their own versions of the wonderful instrument. It is most recognized by the fame of the Gibson J200. It is possible to sculpt the tone of this or any instrument by variations in tone-wood selection and top brace design.

Body Type: Jumbo, Frets: 14 to the body, 21 total, Body Dimensions: 20.95″ x 17.05″ x 5.2″, Bracing: Traditional X, Scale: 25.4″.

Some Additional Acoustics Available:

000-28VS Jumbo 12 String Grand Auditorium 12 String HD-28VS

Available Classical Guitar Plans:

Virtually every grand classic guitar is based on the original concert classical that was developed by Antonio De Torres in the 1850′s. These plans follow this form as well. Four bracing patterns are available to choose from, which will give you wide ranging tone and volume. Available Classical Guitar Plans are:

Ramirez Bracing Bouchet Bracing Kasha Schneider Bracing Classic Torres Bracing

This is a challenging process to buy your first guitar. Whether you happen to be buying for the first time, buying a gift, or buying your fifth guitar, it’s necessary to comprehend the essentials and craftsmanship of the finest best acoustic guitar. A prospective player should be aware of what exactly they are searching for. Most beginners are not aware the difference inside the tone quality of assorted brands.

The main decision to get a beginner is deciding which kind of music to try out. There are classical guitars which are for classical and Spanish music, acoustic electric ones that provide just a little amplification, and jazz guitars that are primarily for jazz music. A simple steel stringed acoustic guitar can enjoy many types of music. A good acoustic guitar for beginners is available on the internet stores in the range of $200 to $400.

Ideally, is not recommended to just go and pick up one guitar, participate in it, and then buy it. A beginner should test several brands, and then try to listen to the different tone qualities produced by the guitars. This generally develops an idea and triggers better making decisions in new guitar players to choose what kind suits them and fits their budget. Acoustic guitar tones vary greatly between wood, bridge make, the neck, and also the strings on it. Make sure to try different varieties.

You should look at researching the wood utilized in guitars. Cheaper guitars are made from plywood, and often break down and obtain damaged quickly. They also sound horrible. Spruce is the best wood for your acoustic guitar top, and Mahogany is really a good back, sides, and neck. Ebony and rosewood are used to make the best fret boards. It is recommended to research on different wood types as well as their sound velocity to create a good wood and tone quality match.

One thing to look for is the size. Guitars come in different sizes. There are classic, jumbo, and dreadnaught, just to name a few. A beginner should always test various sizes, before selecting an acoustic guitar to determine what one feels preferred to play.

My last word of advice is to look into the frets within the neck of the guitar. Sometimes the frets stick out, creating a buzzing inside the tone.

Do Not Purchase a Cheap Guitar!

Cheap guitars aren’t any good! Avoid getting a cheap guitar simply because you are a beginner. The sound is terrible, tones are off track, and the tuning machine doesn’t work properly occasionally. You might play for a time until you realise that your particular guitar is out of tune and you have to continuously readjust it. This is only going to waste your time and discourage one to play often. Don’t think that just because a guitar is cheap and that it’s a good deal. It’s not essential that you spend big in your first guitar, but you should definitely make sure you are purchasing a quality guitar for the money.

So you’ve spent hours of your time considering reviews, testing different guitars, and comparing prices and still have finally found the best acoustic guitar to suit your needs. Congratulations! Now it is time that you should get the best strings to suit your needs in the process. Lucky to suit your needs though, it’s a lot easier than choosing the guitar itself. Guitarists have different preferences of strings depending on weight, ease of use, plus the guitar they prefer. Choosing the right variety of strings makes or breaks the tone of even the best acoustic guitar. To receive the best sound through your guitar, it’s vital so good strings are chosen.

Different kinds of Strings You will discover generally 3 different types of guitar strings:

1. Nylon Strings Made especially for classical and jazz guitars nylon strings provide a warm tone to produce classical and jazz music. Nylon strings are ideal for beginners since they are gentle to the fingers and are gentler than acoustic steel strings. Additionally it is possible to set nylon strings on acoustic guitars.

2. Acoustic Steel Strings Created from brass and bronze, these strings are perfect for making rock’n'roll, country, and folk music. Steel strings develop a much brighter and sharper tone as compared to nylon strings. It is usually recommended to not use steel strings on classical guitars given that they can break the instrument. It is best to decide what type of music you’ll play and install strings in respect.

3. Electric Guitar Strings Most are made from nickel-plated steel or chrome steel and they are specially designed for only electric guitars.

Choosing Your Strings

1. Choosing Strings In accordance with Your Playing Style Each playing style is coupled with a different sort of string. Choosing strings for tone that can then be softer and warmer or brighter and sharper is a lot more determined by the player’s style as opposed to the guitar itself. Classical and jazz guitarists would choose nylon strings or lighter steel strings. A rock guitarist would choose thicker and heavier steel strings.

2. What Weight You Wish The weight or gauge of your guitar strings are a major factor when selecting the most effective ones for yourself. Thicker strings will have more tension or more vibrant sound. Lighter strings have to have a gentler touch because they are easier to break. Guitarists alsofind it easier to choose strings once they have tried few different kinds. People decide the gauge on the strings once their hand feels comfortable over a particular kind.

3. Prices It’s good to choose strings that happen to be economical to buy. Professional guitarists have to change their strings regularly since strings wear out when they are played constantly. It is nice to buy in bulk and keep an extra set in the event the one to the guitar breaks.

4. Brands There a many brands designed for guitar strings that are made available online. These strings are engineered to get a long life and seldom break. Some guitarists recommend these branded strings, yet others feel there’re expensive and encourage using unbranded ones. Try choosing a few different brands, and after using each, keep to the one you like the simplest.

Chords are groups of notes, which are strummed together. This is the easiest method to accompany you when singing. Most chords are made up of notes that sound good together and will enhance your vocals and others are meant to demand attention.

Chords are groups of notes, which are strummed together. This is the easiest method to accompany you when singing. Most chords are made up of notes that sound good together and will enhance your vocals and others are meant to demand attention.

They are played by pressing down on certain strings with your left hand and strumming across all the strings, or by plucking individual ones with your other hand. It is a common practice to make a strum more interesting by plucking the lowest or bass note of the chord with the side of your thumb prior to strumming downwards on the remainder .

A few basic rules apply to chords which you’ll need to know when reading music. 1) Chords are named according to letters going from A to G 2) An ‘m’ after a letter means that the chord is a minor chord 3) A ’7′ after the letter means that the chord is a dominant chord – a letter without ‘m’ or ’7′ means that the chord is a major chord

Here is a couple of practice tips to improve your strumming. a)Instead of just practicing one chord at a time, try practicing 3 chords at once and you’ll learn a lot faster than if you just practice one at a time. It’s said that this method of practicing 3 chords at a time actually helps your brain retain this info and makes it easier to recall the individual chords easier. b)When you feel a bit more comfortable switching from chord to chord try practicing chord changes blind folded, I think you’ll be amazed how much this will help.

Finger picking is when each string is plucked individually instead of strummed together. Practice picking until you are able to create an even rippling sound. Most people use a pic (plectrum) when employing this method. When a pic is used on an electric guitar gives a fuller, more vibrant sound. Pics come in a dual thumb and finger design as well as the single pick which you hold between your thumb and finger.

To practice finger picking try this exercise: i) Hold down the E chord with your left hand and with the pick between your thumb and first finger of your right hand, pick each string individually starting with string six. ii) Next do a strum of all the strings iii) Finally, starting with six string, pick each string four times, alternating up and down strokes iv) And repeat

TIMA – This is the acronym for the fingers used in picking. The baby finger is really only used for steadying and balance.

T = Thumb, I = Index finger, M = Middle finger, A = Ring finger

Try this, put your pinky against the body of the guitar to hold your hand steady and play this sequence, (T)four, (T)5, (M)6. Repeat this over and – over, 456,456,456,456 until you drive yourself nuts. Keep in mind the top string is always the smallest – 1, working through to the bottom string 6. This is method of playing is referred to as a roll.

If you’re serious about playing an instrument, you no doubt must have heard something about woodwind instruments. Sometimes described as the ‘sweet’ component of an ensemble, woodwinds are considered critical in quite a few senses to many forms of music.

Which exactly are woodwinds? The most easily found or well known woodwind instruments are the flute, saxophone, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and English horn. These instruments have been called woodwinds to distinguish them from the typical brass instruments. A lot of these instruments use a wood piece named a reed that the musician blows through and is finely made to guide the airflow in the proper fashion, making a rich and clear sound. Depending on the way that woodwinds are played, these instruments can sound either deep or breathy, hardy or tender, growling or piercing.

Every music store ordinarily stock a variety of woodwinds which will be available to try out while you shop. If you’re not sure of which woodwind is right for you, it’s vital to do a wee bit of exploration and give some consideration to the point, as woodwinds are usually not cheap. These instruments depend on excellent build quality for their gorgeous sound, which suggests that the more you are prepared to pay for woodwinds, the better the outcomes you could see once you play it. Try going to a music store and enquire to the staff about the specific woodwind instrument you’re interested in. These folks could in all probability show you a array of choices and maybe propose one which is suited to your uses. It doesn’t do any damage to explore producers that manufacture woodwinds before your expedition to the musical instrument store, either. It can be difficult to try out a woodwind prior to purchase if you’re new to them, so locating a excellent suggestion is critical.

After you have obtained your woodwind, you can need to begin practice with a certified teacher who is skilled in your typical classic music and woodwinds in particular. Your nearby music store can be able to advise you on good instructors in your town – ask them when you make your purchase. If not, a swift hunt on Google can reveal instructors of woodwind instruments close to you.

After you have been learning for a certain amount of time and loyal practice, you should be prepared to play with others. You may decide to play in the woodwind section of an orchestra (although it requires a prolonged time to get to that level, so persistence is vital), or alternatively you may prefer to join a classical ensemble with others like a quartet or quintet. Once again, your musical instrument store could almost certainly possess contacts and posted advertisements seeking woodwinds for neighborhood groups. Woodwinds are typically in demand so it shouldn’t be too much of a hassle to discover a ensemble to play with.

Woodwind instruments are a terrific door into the world of classical music and any individual who performs woodwinds will be able to affirm to you that they are exciting, inspiring and absolutely spectacular when performed well. Take up a woodwind and you can be setting yourself up for many years of gratifying musical progress and enjoyment.

Since the beginning of the 18th century, pianos have come to be among the most valued musical instruments in the world. They’re warm and exquisite instruments and practically nothing can top the sound they create.

The name ‘piano’ is a shortened form of the Italian name for the instrument, ‘pianoforte’, which we say translates to ‘soft’ and ‘loud’. This relates to the piano’s capacity for playing both extremely softly or quite loudly, based on how much power the pianist puts into their fingers. The pedals on the bottom of the piano are utilized to make the sounds either short and ‘staccato’ or longer and connected, or ‘legato’. The end result is that the player can change the sound a lot, making it practicable to have a wide assortment of ways to express themselves.

Today there are a lot of piano substitutes in the form of electronic keyboards and other machines, but nothing can replace the real thing. Pianos get their warm and delicate sound from using a felt-covered hammer that strikes against steel strings which are set in rows inside the instrument. When you press a key, the hammer strikes against the corresponding string and vibrates it. This produces a rich tone which cannot be copied, even with today’s technology. Even today, recording artists go to great lengths to find real pianos to use in their recordings, simply because the sound produced by the acoustic string-hammer model is impossible to copy.

Pianos are versatile not simply because of their expressiveness, but also because pianos may be used in a great number of distinct genres of music. At first glance, when somebody says ‘piano’ you may imagine music from the Baroque, Classical or Romantic periods – music such as that of Beethoven, Bach, Chopin or Mozart. These brilliant musicians knew how to make the piano do wonderful things, and to learn to play their pieces on your own can be a totally inspiring experience. But playing piano is of course not limited to these masters. Pianists like Fats Waller, Duke Ellington and Thelonius Monk brought a whole new domain of sound to the piano by way of bending and breaking the ‘rules’ of the music of earlier times. Nowadays, their music lives on as proof of the piano’s timelessness as well as the power of the sounds it creates.

In present day music, pianos are still used in rock, pop, jazz, blues, reggae, funk, soul – almost any genre you can come up with, along with even hip hop and metal. When you learn to play piano in one style, it will become astonishingly easy to swiftly learn to play other genres due to the fact that your fingers are going to be used to the keys and your understanding of music will likely have improved noticeably. Unlike other instruments, the piano lets you see exactly what note you happen to be touching because the keys are there right before your eyes.

An additional fantastic advantage of the piano over many other instruments is its polyphony. Polyphony means having the ability to play more than one note at the same time. It is possible to produce new sounds simply by experimenting with distinct combinations of notes. This is one of the top reasons why the piano continues to be the instrument preferred by such a large number of the world’s brilliant musicians. A lush world of emotion and color will be found whenever you delve into the piano and take advantage of its potential.

It’s possible that the most fulfilling part about getting a piano is the fact that it is possible to sit down at it, at any time of the day, and play a gorgeous, age-old instrument. Regardless of whether you would prefer to take on a music teacher or study piano on your own by means of training books and courses, getting an instrument that’s a joy to play is among the most crucial parts about encouraging yourself to continue. Nothing is more enjoyable than possessing your own personal piano in your own home, where both you and your family and friends or children can take pleasure in it.

If you have kids, you will know how advantageous it really is to stimulate them musically from the time they are very young. A lot of people regret not having learnt to play piano as a kid, so it’s a good idea to give your children this option and they’re going to thank you in the years to come. It is also well recognized that musical development can offer neurological benefits in other areas – what this means is that by playing piano often, you or your children can increase their mental ability too!

Possibly you’ve observed pianos being played during wedding ceremonies or other events. There is something very special about having someone playing piano in the background. Picture having the opportunity to get pleasure from this atmosphere within your own house. Playing the piano will provide hours of stunning music, turning your home into a relaxing and creatively inspiring spot to live.

A piano will open up avenues to wonderful new musical choices. The decision to acquire a piano is a large one, but well worth the time and effort.

Learn more about pianos at a reputable music store, visit Sean Ryder’s site to find the best stringed instruments for your needs.

The electric guitar has advanced far beyond the time when someone could teach himself (or herself) to become a world class player. If your ambition is to become a competent player and a competent musician, you need a competent teacher. Even if your goals are more modest, you can reach those goals far more quickly, easily and efficiently with the guidance of the right teacher.

Much of the information needed to learn about guitar playing (and music in general) is available from many different sources. There are hundreds of books, instructional videos, CD-ROMs and, of course, the Internet. Even though a lot of information is readily available, there exists a lot of incorrect, incomplete and otherwise bad information (this is especially true for a lot of information found on the Internet!).

You will need the aid of an excellent teacher to teach you how to fully understand and apply the correct information. You can save yourself a lot of unnecessary frustration and disappointment by studying with a good teacher. Remember that textbooks, CD-ROMs, instructional videos and the Internet cannot answer your specific questions. They cannot offer you advice on your playing, song writing, ear training, etc. They cannot listen to your playing and point out any mistakes or flaws that may be present. Some textbooks are great and I have seen some pretty good CD-ROMs out there too, but you still need the aid of an excellent teacher to guide you through everything and to help you develop your abilities and musicianship correctly and efficiently.

Great teachers manage and schedule new materials and effectively explain their importance and meaning. A teacher should encourage you when you are doing well and correct you when you make mistakes. Good teachers will show you how to better organize your practice materials and show you how to effectively manage your practice time (this is crucial to your progress!). They help you build up your confidence level (even if you are not consciously aware that this is happening). A great teacher will help you become secure with your technical skills so that you can execute difficult techniques on your guitar comfortably. These teachers emphasize creativity (songwriting and improvising) and performing.

Great teachers want to make sure that you fully understand what you are learning and, most importantly, teach you how to apply it by giving you detailed explanations and encouraging you to ask questions when something is unclear. A good teacher sincerely cares about your musical growth and development. An experienced and competent teacher will take you far beyond what you could learn on your own. Unfortunately, guitar teachers are not licensed and there is no organization that oversees or regulates them. Anyone can claim to be a good teacher and there are lots of people who make this claim. The number of competent teachers, however, is limited.

This brings us to this crucial question: how can a student find, choose, and then accurately evaluate a guitar teacher? Here are some questions that you should ask any teachers you are considering studying with. I have also included my own comments for each question:

1) Can you please tell me about your teaching experience? May I see your resume or credentials? How long have you been teaching and approximately how many students have you taught during that time?

At least three to five years of teaching experience is preferred – certainly no less than one year of experience. Prefer a teacher who has taught a moderate to large number of students. It takes time for a teacher to truly learn how to teach well, and the main way that someone learns to teach is by teaching for a while.

The students of a new teacher are like experiments. These teachers are learning how to teach on the job by trial and error. They need time to learn how to teach, and will make some mistakes in the beginning of their careers. You don’t want to be one of those first thirty to fifty students. Let a new teacher gain his or her experience by making mistakes with someone else.

2) Do you teach private lessons or group lessons?

You definitely want private lessons, unless you are a total beginner or are enrolled in a college music course. You will learn a lot more about playing guitar in a one-on-one private lesson or in a correspondence lesson program.

3) What styles of music do you teach best?

Make sure you ask this question before telling the prospective teacher what style of music you want to learn. A lot of teachers claim to teach all styles well. Beware of this. Do not be impressed by someone who tells you that he or she can teach every style of music well.

If you really want to be a great rock guitarist, take lessons from a rock teacher, not a blues or country player who claims to teach all styles well. Find yourself a good rock teacher. If you want to learn multiple styles of music that are not similar (like country, classical and heavy metal) take lessons from more than one teacher for each of those styles. Unless you are a total beginner, you are better off with an expert teacher in your style of music, not a jack-of-all-trades teacher.

4) What is the cost of lessons?

Excellent teachers are in demand and usually already have a lot of students. These teachers often are not cheap. I can tell you that the going rates for good teachers in the Midwestern United States (where I live) is between $16-$24 per 1/2 hour private lesson (rates may be different in your state or country). There are a handful of teachers offering correspondence lessons for students who do not live in the same state or country as the teacher. Usually these lessons are less expensive in the long run (read more about correspondence lessons later). In general, don’t look for the teacher with the lowest rates; you usually get what you pay for. If you can’t afford to pay the higher rates for a really good teacher, ask the teacher if you can take lessons on a bi-monthly basis instead of taking weekly lessons.

5) Can you tell me how you teach the lessons?

This is probably the most important question you can ask a teacher. The answer to this question can help you determine if a teacher is competent, because this is actually a trick question. Anyone can tell you they have been teaching for 100 years, they have had 10,000 students and the cost is $1,000 per lesson because they are the greatest teacher of all time. But an inexperienced teacher cannot trick you with his or her answer to this question (unless he or she is reading this article.)

If a prospective teacher who does not know you, your musical knowledge, your guitar technique, your musical tastes, and your musical goals tries to explain how he or she will teach you, this is not a competent teacher. Not even the best teacher on Earth could answer this question if that teacher knows nothing about you, your goals, your playing level, your knowledge of music theory, etc.
