In a previous article, I talked about preparing yourself for a band rehearsal. So now you’ve rehearsed and are ready to perform in front of an audience, how do you prepare yourself for your first gig? You are probably feeling nervous and apprehensive, but these feelings can be controlled if you are well prepared for the performance – take a look at the following points and use them as a check list to help you in your preparation.

1. Get to the venue early: This is extremely important. You need to make sure your equipment is connected and you are able to do a quick sound check. All manner of problems could arise in terms of equipment failure or other issues. If you are bringing your own PA equipment you should make sure it is all set up and sounding ok, but even if the venue supplies their own, you should still make sure it all works, and that other performance accessories such as effects pedals are hooked up and ready to go, bring a guitar tuner to ensure the guitars are tuned properly, and make sure the amp and microphone levels are all ok, the drums also need to be checked. Once this is all done you may have some spare time to grab a drink for some Dutch courage, but don’t get drunk before the gig, many bands have made this mistake before, and it doesn’t sound good!

2. Bring spares: No matter what instrument you play, it is vital that you bring along spare accessories, so guitar and bass players should have at least two or three spare sets of guitar strings and guitar picks, you never know when a string will break, and guitar picks can easily slip out of your fingers, you don’t want to be hunting around on the floor for it in the middle of a performance. If you are singing and playing, then it would be a good idea to buy a microphone stand with a pick holder included. Drummers should bring some spare drumsticks. It would also be a good idea to bring your own cables, as mentioned above you don’t want to get there and find the only guitar cable you have has now stopped working, just as you’re about to play.

3. Bring a set list: You may have gone through the songs and the order you are going to play them in thousands of times in a rehearsal studio, but it’s never a bad idea to have a set list so everyone knows what song to play and when.

4. Bring some recording equipment: Not essential, but always useful, if this Is your first gig it’s likely people will make mistakes, if you record you can listen back through and find out where you can improve.

5. Be calm: It’s very easy to get nervous if you are playing in front of people for the first time, and this can affect your playing. Try to remain calm, concentrate and most importantly enjoy yourself!

Arthur Charles is a guitar and bass player who has played a variety of music in different bands over the last three decades. He now fills his time promoting Bandshop.co.uk, online retailers of music accessories including effects pedals, guitar strings, microphone stands, guitar picks and much more.

Starting a band is a project that many people, usually the young ones, think about. On their way to accomplishing their dream, they are driven by the desire of transmitting certain messages to those who listen to their music or of offering them special moments to remember all their lives. However, there are certain steps to follow when starting a troupe, one of them being to decide on the music they will perform. Even if they are capable of playing more than one music genre, the recommendation is to try to perform only one type of music.

Selecting the members of the troop is one difficult task because it is hard to find the right people who have the same goals and views of life. The fact that each individual is unique and has his certain way of acting and thinking may take a band longer to be started. Be aware that they have to be able to understand each other and also to know how to play an instrument. A band usually requires a bassist, a guitarist, a drummer and a vocalist, but if you find more than one person to play well the same instrument, the more, the merrier. The sole condition is for them to sound great together, as a whole, because the public will be interested in the entire band and not only in a particular individual.

The next step consists of buying the right equipment. The type of music played has once more something to say because the instruments should have certain properties if a certain music genre is to be performed. Make sure you have all the information you need before assessing the equipment from Sounds Great Music and try not to think about money if you want to own a quality gear. Make some sacrifices if you have decided to go on with your dream.

After having decided upon the members, their roles and the equipment, it is time to start thinking about giving the troop a name. Let every individual speak his mind and come up with as many ideas as possible. Still, try to find something that characterizes the entire group and that is easy to remember. This is also a difficult mission because once chosen, you cannot change it if you want people to not get confused.

The publicity is another responsibility you should take care of. For this, it is important to be present at every festival or school reunion there is. The media plays an important role too, so every local radio, TV station and newspaper has to mention the great performance the band gives. A website is another essential tool in letting everyone know about your troupe.

Sounds Great Music offers you great PRS Guitar instruments you will be need when starting a band.

Those that have considered playing the acoustic guitar, but haven’t made that final push towards getting one and signing up for some lessons, may need a final push. It is with that intention that I write this article. For those of you that need a few extra reasons to take up this wonderful instrument, this article is for you.

The first reason is that with the acoustic guitar, you will enjoy enormous social proof and recognition. It’s no secret that guys who play the acoustic guitar have a certain charm, magnetism and appeal to them. If you’ve ever seen a the attention a guy gets at a party when he plays the acoustic guitar, then you know what I’m talking about.

Another reason is that the guitar will skyrocket your ability to express yourself. It will open up avenues that you thought were perhaps closed off to your emotional expression. When you play the guitar, or any musical instrument for that matter, you will be availing yourself to a technique known since modern times for its ability of expression.

Several folks aren’t attentive to the made and illustrious history of the acoustic guitar. From the Egyptians, to the Babylonians, to the Romans and beyond, the acoustic guitar has been spherical as long as civilization. Although it’s modified slightly over the years, the fundamental design is that the same. When you hold an acoustic guitar in your hands, you are holding history.

And perhaps the greatest reason to play the acoustic guitar is it is not only one of the few standalone instruments around, but it is completely portable, allowing you to take it virtually anywhere you’d like to go. Bars, parties, weekend getaways, you’ll never have to be without your trusted friend and sidekick, the acoustic guitar.

Of course you won’t be able to play the guitar unless you actually get started. Do yourself a favor, and start playing today. If you don’t a guitar, get one, and get started on some lessons. You’re life will never be the same again.

Watching a skilled guitarist completely dominate an audience is a fantastic event to behold. The way they seem connected to their guitar, as if they were born somehow attached to it. They seem to have a direct connection between their thoughts and the music blaring from the speakers.

Most of us, after watching such a performance, are inspired to learn the guitar. We want to make such beautiful music. We want to be the one up on stage drawing the admiration of all the fans. Of course, this is much harder than we’d like it to be. Most of us would simply like to pick up a guitar and start jamming right away. But when we realize that it requires time and effort, that is usually enough to stop us dead in our tracks.

But this is based on a misguided analysis of the situation. Learning the guitar doesn’t have to be a chore, like doing your laundry to cleaning out the garage once a year. Learning the guitar can actually be quite a fun experience, and rewarding in and of itself. Those that take this attitude are the ones that learn the guitar the quickest and the easiest.

The secret, is not to expect to be playing like that guy up on stage. Truth be told, many times what we mortals think as a guitar solo delivered straight from the guitar gods themselves is oftentimes thought to be filled with errors by the guitarist himself. When choosing any goal, it is best to only compare yourself to yourself, and no one else.

This where it is vitally important to choose the right guitar course. One where you can repeat lessons as often as necessary, as well as skip ahead as you see fit is essential. This way you’ll easily be able to chart your progress and eventually be the guy up on stage.

One place where more and more people are starting to discover is an excellent place to learn the acoustic guitar is on the Internet. There are several multi module course that offer a wide variety of learning elements that will have you up and playing in no time at all.

Have you ever had one of those nights, where you are just sitting around, looking forward to an easy, relaxing night of watching TV, or maybe surfing the Internet, when your plans suddenly turn upside down? That’s what happened to me the other night. My friends just showed up out of nowhere, and told me we were going to the concert of a lifetime.

We were speeding down this windy mountain road in my friends VW Beetle. I didn’t think those things could go that fast. They kept playing these guitar based rock and roll songs on the radio. I guess we were warming up for something. What I had no idea.

We showed up at this abandoned barn. There were about fifty cars already there. We found a place to park and made our way across this old corn field to this barn that had obviously seen better days. When we walked inside, I was amazed beyond belief.

The inside was clean, and had several chairs set up that were facing a huge stage up in front. There was an area directly in front of stage with no chairs, so people could get up close to the stage. When we got there, there was still some space, so we pushed our way into the stage.

What happened next was amazing. This band jumped out on stage, and the clear leader, this guy that was playing an acoustic guitar, jumped right into the first song, which was this really long ballad, that was just absolutely beautiful. I’d never heard anything like it in my entire life.

Finally, after a really long jam session, they started giving out copies of their CDs. I guess they just signed this huge recording contract, and this was there way of thanking their loyal fans. It was a night I’ll never forget.

A few days ago, I was having a picnic with my girlfriend on the beach. We were just about ready to get up and go, when this guy started playing this acoustic guitar. And it wasn’t like those guys who play on the street that don’t have a lot of talent. This guy was absolutely amazing. He played so beautifully that my girlfriend started weeping tears of ecstasy.

I wanted to know where he learned such amazingly beautiful guitar playing skills. Like when you see a famous painter, and he is painting something really beautiful. This guitar player was just like this, only he used music instead of paint. I finally asked him where he learned his mad skills, and he said he learned from a reclusive guitar master who never slept in the same spot twice in the same night.

So finally after some prodding and pushing, he finally agreed to introduce us to the owner. It was the best acoustic guitar lesson I’d ever experienced. I didn’t know what it was, but something told me I would be enjoying those guitar skills for many years to come.

Immediately after we concluded our introductory session, he provided us a background of the acoustic guitar. The guitar was invented by several different cultures at several occasions in the course of history, so no one people can claim the classical guitar as their very own. But the very first man who made it well known was this European man about five hundred or so years before.

Right after that it proceeded to go mainstream, and pretty much everybody was enjoying the acoustic guitar. At celebrations, on avenue corners, and even in dining establishments like the actual one me and my buddy first found this wonderful and splendid acoustic guitar player. I inform you, it was the most remarkable experience I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing.

If you like songs, I will tell you the truth. Playing the acoustic guitar is far and away the best and simplest way to express your emotions, let soar your feelings, and get in touch with that good super conscious mind that is actually in contact with everybody. Who knows, you may be the subsequent Jimmy Page.

Because of its popularity, the guitar is one of the simpler instruments to learn to play. Firstly, many learning resources exist and are readily available. Secondly, the guitar is a very portable instrument, especially the acoustic version which doesn’t require you to plug in an amplifier. This makes it easy to learn and practice anywhere! Of course we’re not even considering the ‘coolness’ factor.

But don’t be too quick to walk around strumming away, you should take guitar lessons in order to become a true guitar player.

There are three main routes one can go to learn how to play the guitar. One way is to teach yourself using various resources including music books, chord sheets, videos and interactive lessons from the internet.
