Finding Great Guitar Instruction Online

August 22nd, 2010 by Jonah Schriever | No Comments | Filed in learn guitar on

Music is one of the characteristics that define humanity. It is an expression of our emotions that can transcend speech. Nearly every person has some innate musical ability, and with the right instruction can learn to play music. The guitar has become a nearly universal instrument, widely used in nearly every musical format and genre. If you want to learn to play the guitar, prepare yourself for an enjoyable and valuable experience which can provide lifelong rewards.

We are all familiar with the cartoon pictures of a child gazing sadly out the window, seeing his friends playing while he is forced to practice the piano. Later in life those lessons start to take on a new importance, and many of us regret not paying more attention. It is never too late to start learning how to play and create music. All it takes is a good teacher, a little time and practice.

What is the best way to learn this skill? Private home lessons with a good teacher are the ideal, but may be impractical, and can be costly. They usually require setting aside time during the day, which may be difficult to schedule. An excellent alternative for the beginner is the Internet, home to a variety of online instructional courses in music education. There are a number of step-by-step methods available, and one may work for you.

Before choosing any course of instruction, be sure to shop around. There are web-based videos, free instruction, or training via DVD. One thing all of these methods have in common is that they progress from the simple to complex. It is very important as a new student to honestly analyze his or her own talents and abilities in order to choose the right type of course.

Also, resist the temptation to skip right to the “good stuff”. As a new student you will need to thoroughly master the basic skills. If you already own an instrument, good. If you need to buy one, a decent, inexpensive six-string acoustic will be adequate for training. Get a set of light gauge picks, and expect your fingers to be a little sore at first. Choose a study time when you can all your attention to learning. Remember, a simple love of music by itself doesn’t teach you chord progressions or sight reading, and needs to be focused.

All online courses for the beginning students will start basically the same way. A good course will not neglect the physical aspects of the guitar and strings, because it is important to understand what is producing those great sounds, and what their names and functions are. It will teach how to tune those strings, and what the correct fingering positions are. Equally important is learning to read the notes on a page, and exactly what they mean.

Once the basics have been presented, most courses will teach you how to turn that knowledge into a song. Nearly every kind of music we hear and enjoy today makes use of the guitar in some fashion, whether that is classical, pop, rock or jazz. Be sure not to skip sight reading, because recognizing and understanding the notes on a musical page is essential for musical development. The person who proudly proclaims that they have never had a lesson may indeed have a great deal of musical ability and natural talent, but is actually at a disadvantage when it comes to written notes.

Once you have mastered the basics, an online course will teach musical style, and the skills, chord structure and harmony basic to that style. This includes blues, rock, or classical music. Advanced strumming techniques and chords will follow. Usually these are presented in a logical, easy-to-understand format that will both encourage and instruct. If you want to learn to play the guitar on your own schedule, and at your own pace, an online course is the way to go. There is nothing more satisfying and fun than having the ability to pick up an instrument and dazzle your audience, even if that is an audience of one.

You can learn blues guitar from many sources. You can take lessons at your local community college. You can find someone who teaches guitar and take group or even private lessons. You will want to decide why you want to play blues guitar of course.

If your answer is to simply learn the guitar to play then you will want to take some basic lessons to learn some general chords before advancing to the level of blues guitar. Then you have to realize that the purest of blues guitar will say that you need to live a life of the blues before you can play the blues guitar.

They will say that unless you have lived the live of the blues, one of sorrow and emotional pain, you will never be a true guitar blues player. But if even you have not lived a life of the blues there is nothing stopping you from giving it a try. You might surprise yourself and even the purest.

The reason you become an expert blues guitarist might be more about your dedication to practice rather than your life experiences. You can of course look to the internet in these days of online instruction to learn the basics of blues guitar.

You will find blues guitar video lessons on the internet. You can watch a video online that is about five to ten minutes long that will demonstrate techniques and scales and what are known in the art, licks. You can start off with free videos and then if you want can upgrade to a paid service that will teach more in depth about chords and more complex scales and licks.

The great part about learning from a video is that you can work at your own pace. You can watch the video and listen to the sound of the chords and scales. And then when you are ready you can join in or you can simply try playing the piece first and then try playing with the video.

You can concentrate on the instructors on how they play. You will want to get it to the point that it is second nature for you. The video that you can use at your own pace is a good lesson tool for the beginner. But you have to put in the time and effort to become the master you want to be. You need determination and self discipline to get to the level that perhaps even someday you can teach others to play the blues guitar.
