The Internet is a breeding ground for people claiming to be something they’re not. In order to make sure that you are getting lessons from a credible teacher you are going to want to see proof. One crucial indicator as to whether this is a good person to learn from is how good they are as a player. Always look for samples of their guitar playing before you decide to trust what they have to say.

Look for transparency on their site and in their teaching materials. For example: someone claiming to have taught 50 of the best guitarists in the world how to play without any proof is probably not as good as someone who says they have taught 100 regular people and has proof to back it up. Looking for tangible evidence is also a great way to ensure that this person can actually teach. It’s not just that they are a good player, you want to make sure they are a good teacher too.

Look at how long they have been playing/teaching. If they just started their website yesterday after they had been playing for 6 months, they probably aren’t the ideal candidate to teach you the best methods to learning to play guitar. As well, if they don’t voluntarily tell you this information, it’s probably best to go over their feedback and materials with a fine-toothed comb.

Look for free lessons/content before paying a cent. If they aren’t offering any free content, you probably want to stay away. This usually means that turning a profit is more important to them than providing genuinely useful lesson content and ensuring that their eventual customers actually see and feel that they are getting better.

Any free content they provide, as either a player or teacher, should be closely scrutinized. If you are just starting out as a player, get someone who is experienced to take a look at their content and see what they think (if you don’t know any other players, look for feedback or ratings on their site/content). Their content should be well presented and easy to follow/understand.

The more ways you can be exposed to material the better you learn it. If a teacher offers lessons in video, audio, and written formats, you are going to be able to remember many times more information than if they only offered one medium. This is a very important factor in deciding on a program.

If you see anything that says this person’s method is the “only way” or this is “how to play guitar” spoken as if it is the only way, take it with a grain of salt. Good guitar players and teachers know that there are many ways to do most things on the guitar and it is largely a case of what works best for each person. There are, however, common conventions that most good players use, but that never means that they are the only way. Everyone is different (anatomically and creatively) and that means that what works for some won’t work for all.
